Go See Kenya - The Marine Project
Overview
Volunteers will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of seeing dolphins, turtles, whales and whale sharks in their natural environments whilst detailing their abundance and behaviour. Lectures on the biology of species found in the area will be given to offer volunteers a deeper understanding of the environment; for instance, anthropogenic threats, to which species may be vulnerable. The boat will leave early in the morning, as cetaceans are most active at this time and the sea is at its calmest. The vessel Pingusi (a 30 foot catamaran) will be carrying out line surveys and photo-ID within particular sections of the Pemba Channel. Volunteers will be tested on their distance estimation before contributing towards the survey, ensuring that all data collected is scientifically robust.
Please bear in mind that the species you will see will depend on the time of year in which you visit. An outline is below:
January, February and March- Whale Sharks
May- Turtle Nesting Season
July, August, September and October- Humpback Whales (end if July) & Spinner Dolphins
November and December- Spinner Dolphins
Bottlenose and Indo-Pacific Hump back Dolphins can be seen all year round
